Thursday Lyrics: Ancient Words

September 13, 2007

Exodus

Ancient Words is a contemporary hymn our church frequently sings.  The 4th stanza is my favorite, although I have never sung it at any church other than the one we attend, nor have I heard it on a recording.

The writer, Lynn DeShazo, states that while our society has a fascination with ancient things, such as Celtic hymns, our true desire is for the Ancient of Days.  What do you think?

Ancient Words

Holy words long preserved
For our walk in this world,
They resound with God’s own heart
Oh, let the ancient words impart.

Words of life, words of hope
Give us strength, help us cope
In this world, where e’er we roam
Ancient words will guide us home.

Chorus:
Ancient words ever true
Changing me, and changing you.
We have come with open hearts
Oh let the ancient words impart.

Holy words of our faith
Handed down to this age.
Came to us through sacrifice
Oh heed the faithful words of Christ.

Martyrs’ blood stains each page
They have died for this faith
Hear them cry through the years,
“Heed these words and hold them dear!”
