Breathing Lessons

June 21, 2007

So I got a call from a survey company who wanted me to receive and review an issue of O, The Oprah Magazine.  The pictures were glossy, the ads well constructed.  Some of the articles were even interesting.

Now y’all, I know everyone loves Oprah, but some of the stuff in this magazine is ridiculous.  Take the article entitled A Million Ways to Save the World.  The article asks people, apparently on a monthly basis, to give their “earthshaking, world-fixing ideas.”  The reason is listed as “So that by Valentine’s Day 2008…Ensler’s movement to end violence against women and girls–we’ll have a gold mine of strategies to help each of us, alone and together, make sorely needed changes.”  And she is asking “the best brains around the globe.”

In this month’s article, one of the five “best brains” questioned was that of Kim Rosen, listed as poet and breath practitionerBreath Practioner????  That alone was enough to give me pause, y’all, because breathing is not really something I have to practice.  You see, God designed us to breathe without thinking.  Anyway…read her idea below:

Breathe.  Breathe instead of slamming into your car horn.  Breathe instead of giving him “the look.”   Breathe before you send a bigger bomb, more troops, another hungry oil rig.  If you breathe, you cannot help but feel.  If you feel, you cannot help but grieve.  If you grieve, you will melt; and if you melt, the fictional edges between you and me will wash away, and then you cannot help but know that the little girl in the FEMA poster, the poet shot in Baghdad, the man sleeping on the subway vent, your own mother whether or not she seemed to love you, all of them are you.

Breathe.  Do it now while we still have enough air to go around.

So that’s it folks.  Just breathe, and there will be no more violence.  An answer so simple, I wish I had thought of it myself.  Honestly people, is this woman living in reality, at all?
